There are times when the best response is nothing. Some things demand undue attention from us and thereby distract us from the things that really matter. You don’t have to reply to every email and comment on every situation. You don’t owe everyone an explanation all the time. The things you ignore eventually die. Jesus was bundled up in the middle of the night, betrayed by His treasurer and delivered to his enemies. They demanded His immediate execution and took him to the authorities for a quick mock trial. Pilate the presiding judge was only going through the motions because God the eternal judge had predestined that Jesus be crucified for the sins of all humanity. Pilate begun to cross examine Jesus and to his surprise, Jesus didn’t put up a defense. He was silent. He said nothing. The Jews were vehement, Pilate was perplexed and the devil just begun to panic. Jesus said nothing. Silence is golden indeed! You don’t have to respond all the time to all the accusations. Just say nothing and carry on.
SCRIPTURE READING: MARK 15:1-5
And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate. And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.” And the chief priests accused him of many things. And Pilate again asked him, “Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.” But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.
Dear God, grant me grace to tame my tongue and my spirit. Give me strength to ignore the noise and focus on the objective at hand. Give me a single eye that I may keep my hand on your purpose. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
