People start out fine and blessed until they begin to compare themselves with others. Joy can be lost when we start to compare ourselves with others. It is only human nature to want to compare with those around you. What do they have? When did they get it? What do they appear like? All these comparisons are a sure way of losing your joy. Comparisons take your attention from the things that matter and get you chasing after shadows.
You are your own person made in the image of God. There is no point in comparing yourself with others because you are the only you alive today. What others have gone through is not your yardstick. God who started the good work in you is still at work in all your situations. God is personal to everyone. So is His blessing and work in your life. Don’t lose your joy by comparing yourself to others. Your life is not the same as others. Keep your joy by focusing on where God has you instead of comparing with those around you.
SCRIPTURE READING: 1 Corinthians 7:17-24
Nevertheless, each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them. This is the rule I lay down in all the churches. Was a man already circumcised when he was called? He should not become uncircumcised. Was a man uncircumcised when he was called? He should not be circumcised. Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Keeping God’s commands is what counts. Each person should remain in the situation they were in when God called them.
Were you a slave when you were called? Don’t let it trouble you—although if you can gain your freedom, do so. For the one who was a slave when called to faith in the Lord is the Lord’s freed person; similarly, the one who was free when called is Christ’s slave. You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of human beings. Brothers and sisters, each person, as responsible to God, should remain in the situation they were in when God called them.
Devotion Prayer: Gracious God I am thankful because you formed me in your image. Thank you for making me unique and different. I am so grateful for the far you have brought me. I will not let comparison steal my joy for I know you are doing a good work in me in Jesus’ name, Amen.
