A few years ago, I visited a vineyard in South Australia. The vines are creeping plants that become shrubs or small trees over the years. They have long winding branches that bear grapes in their tons. Once the branch is cut off the vine, it withers away and all the capacity to bear fruit is lost. Without the vine, the branch is absolutely dead because it is nourished, sustained and supplied by the vine. The type, quality and quantity of the fruit is all dependant on the vine. I was surprised to learn that some of those vineyards around today are over 200 years old. The branches have the capacity to survive and continue bearing fruit for as long as they stay connected to vine.
So when Jesus categorically told His disciples that He was the vine and they the branches, the clear picture is that of dependences. You are the branch, and must stay connected onto Jesus the vine if you are to stay alive and fruitful. If for any reason the branch is cut off the vine it will wither away and die. Your life depends on staying connected. Your fulfilment depends on staying connected. Without the vine, the branch is good for nothing but fire. With the vine the branch has unlimited capacity not only to survive for decades, but to bear much fruit. Jesus is the vine and you are the branch. Don’t ever get cut off.
SCRIPTURE READING: John 15:1-10 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every [branch] that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. “I am the vine, you [are] the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw [them] into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.
DEVOTION PRAYER: Dear God, am grateful for perceiving you as my vine in this walk. As I continue to submit unto your word, may you become more visible in my life in Jesus’ name.
