There has been a historical debate about whether God wants us as His people to be poor or to enjoy prosperity. Some think that when they are poor they can easily walk in holiness because if they prosper, they will easily fall into temptation. The word of God puts it straight when John the Apostle prayed for the believers in the Third Letter that they would prosper even as their souls prosper. God isn’t and has never been against the prosperity of His children. He isn’t against His children possessing posessions He is against the possessions possessing His children. The bible puts it as coveteousness. Other versions use the word lust. To lust after something is to have a strong insatiable desire. Yes that is what it is. When someone is controlled by this spirit nothing will ever be enough. After you have received your dream car, you want a better one. After you have got your dream house you want a bigger or better one. There is nothing wrong with desiring to do or become better. But when the desire to do or be better consumes us to the extent that we throw away God’s laws and principles we have succumbed to the list after material things. Remember our God is a jealous God and will not share His glory with anyone or anything. Submit your desires and dreams to God and let Him be the centre of your focus as we possess the land.
SCRIPTURE READING: Joshua 7:20-21 And Achan answered Joshua, In truth, I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel, and this have I done: When I saw among the spoils an attractive mantle from Shinar and two hundred shekels of silver and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. Behold, they are hidden in the earth inside my tent, with the silver underneath.
DEVOTION PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I Pray for spiritual empowerment to keep my heart from coveting after material things in Jesus Name, Amen.
