One of the most intense passages of scripture is when Jesus was praying in the garden just before His betrayal and crucifixion. He knew he had to die in order to give humanity a chance at salvation. He knew it was going to be brutal, ugly, evil and painful as God would turn His face from Him. He wrestled with the fact that the armies of heaven where on standby waiting for his command. He could command a storm to tear everything apart including the mountains on which their cities were built. Better still he could just walk on thin air and show everyone how mighty He truly was. It was so tough that He was crying and sweating in prayer that His sweat was like great drops of blood. Through all this agony and tears He mumbled the words, “not my will but yours be done.” This was tough love. Everything in the flesh and mind was yelling that He could stop the misery at any moment but He knew that tough love weeps.
There are times for you to love the Lord through your smile and celebration. There are times you love the Lord by waiting on the Lord, sacrificing, serving and seeking. Then there are times you love Jesus through your tears as you refuse to give up and cling to God will everything you have. Yes you can take the easy way out and no one would blame you. But you can’t dogged your destiny. May you find strength through your tough times to keep loving Jesus and doing His will. May you learn to ignore the lies that want to take you away from your cross, promising a life outside the will of God. When the moment comes, don’t choose the temporal joys of walking alone without God but rather choose to love God through your tears because tough love weeps.
SCRIPTURE READING: Luke 22:39-44 Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him. When He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
DEVOTION PRAYER: Heavenly Father, may I carry the understanding that tough love weeps. Let me not lose the sight that it’s your will and not mine, amen.
